Putting the Second Ward First

The new Second Ward is a sprawling community that includes parts of 11 different neighborhoods, from Streeterville on the lakefront to Ukrainian Village in West Town. As your Alderman, I will work to make my office the hub of an active, engaged new Second Ward that brings people together and forges new bonds across neighborhood boundaries. Crime and Safety

In every neighborhood in the Second Ward, I hear from residents who are concerned about keeping our streets safe and making sure we can live, work and play in our communities without fear of crime. As your Alderman, I will work to make our neighborhoods more secure, in the Second Ward and throughout Chicago. Read more…

Education

I am passionate about public education. I went to public schools as a child. And, I have seen the power of a good education in my own life. I know that strong local schools are an essential building block of thriving neighborhoods, and I will work hard to support, improve and protect every neighborhood school serving the Second Ward. As your Alderman, I will work with families, neighborhood organizations, business groups, teachers, administrators, the Chicago Teachers Union and CPS officials to develop collaborative relationships that will provide our children with the great schools they deserve. Read more…

A Plan for Reform

As your representative in Chicago’s City Council, I will be a progressive, independent advocate for reform. I will not be a rubber stamp for policies that benefit insiders and special interests at taxpayer expense. In City Hall, I will proudly be somebody that “nobody sent.”  I firmly believe that the City Council is a co-equal branch of government that ought to make its decisions independently.  I will not be afraid to speak up on behalf of the people who elected me.  As your Alderman, I will implement a six-point plan for reform that starts in my own office. Read more…

Smart Development

A great city needs to keep on growing, building, and embracing the future – but it also needs to preserve its heritage and protect the character of its neighborhoods. As your Alderman, I will take a balanced approach to development, working with developers and residents to create a collaborative, respectful process that helps our communities to grow and thrive without destroying the charm and livability of our neighborhoods. Fiscal Responsibility

The people of Chicago deserve a City Council that will work closely with the Mayor, whoever that is, to make our government work more effectively for you. But, we also deserve a council that will operate as a co-equal of the executive branch and conduct its own informed debate and analysis to make big decisions. As your Alderman, I will ask my colleagues to start flexing their legislative muscle by holding their own budget hearings and presenting their own report to the public on the city’s financial position. Read more…

Jobs and the Economy

Good jobs are the cornerstone of a strong, thriving community. As your Second Ward Alderman, I will fight to create and support good jobs that pay fair wages and offer decent benefits to everyone. Read more…

Tourism and the Second Ward

With its great restaurants, legendary hotels, fabulous shops and tremendous cultural attractions, the Second Ward is a great place to live, work and visit. As your Alderman, I will work with business owners, labor leaders, tourism organizations and the City to bring tourists (and their vacation dollars) beyond downtown and into our neighborhoods. Strengthening Small Businesses

Small business owners invest their savings, their sweat and their hearts in their companies. I know that many small business owners in the Second Ward are working long hours – sometimes for very slim profits. Our small businesses deserve a City government that understands their needs and respects their contribution to Chicago’s economic base. As your Alderman, I will advocate strongly for thoughtful, consistent regulations and stable tax rates, so our small businesses can make realistic long-term plans for growth and expansion. Read more…

Environment

Greener, cleaner, more sustainable communities.

Chicago has earned a reputation as one of the world’s greenest cities. But there is still much more that we must do to protect our environment, save our lake and keep our air clean and healthy. True community sustainability requires environmental awareness AND a healthy economy. As your Second Ward Alderman, I will be a leader in promoting smart development policies that will make our neighborhoods more vital, healthy, and livable. Read more…
